Fort Collins Surpasses May Precipitation Average After Recent Storm
US · Published May 21, 2026
Fort Collins, Colorado, has experienced above-average rainfall this May, with a total of 3.42 inches recorded so far, surpassing the monthly average of 2.72 inches.
A storm system on May 17-18 contributed 1.42 inches of rain, according to the Colorado Climate Center.
Additional precipitation earlier in the month, including 1.75 inches from a May 4-6 storm, has helped alleviate drought conditions in the area.

Why It's Important?

The increased rainfall has provided some relief to drought conditions in Fort Collins and surrounding areas, though it is not expected to fully resolve the issue. Heavy snow in higher elevations caused disruptions, including the closure of three mountain elementary schools in the Poudre School District and Colorado State University's Mountain Campus. The precipitation has also raised concerns about potential localized flooding in areas with saturated soils. Residents in affected regions should remain cautious of changing weather conditions.
